Skills & Training Centre

We provide services through our Gitxsan Learning Centre and as the South Hazelton Contact North BC office to help members of our local community upgrade their education and skills through thousands of courses available in person and online. If you’re interested in getting a certificate, diploma, degree or you just want to learn a new skill, we can help.

Computer Lab & Study Room

Our dedicated computer lab and study room is free to use - no appointment needed. Our room is equipped with computers, printers, scanners and laminators. There is also a microwave, fridge, water cooler as well as free coffee, tea and snacks for visitors.

    Security professionals working in the province of British Columbia are required to complete mandatory training to qualify for provincial licensing.

    This course provides this basic training and covers key topics including:

    Introduction to Private Security,

    Legal Issues,

    Documentation and Personal Safety

    Prerequisites:

    • Completion of Grade 10 and good reading skills

    • You must be 19 years of age to apply for their Security Worker License

    • You must complete an application form from Northern BC Guard Academy before securing your seat in the training

    Passport photos & fingerprinting will be done in class.

    Location: New GDC Office (1425 Aldous St, South Hazelton)

    OFA1 and TE must be taken together.

    OFA1 is designed to teach you how to respond to the most common and most life-threatening workplace first aid emergencies, including CPR, bleeding, shock, and sudden medical emergencies.

    TE is focused on developing practical skill in patient handling techniques and patient securing procedures.

    Prerequisites:

    • Must be at least 16 years old

    • Must be in good physical shape

    Location: New GDC Office (1425 Aldous St, South Hazelton)

    Occupational First Aid Level 3 is the most comprehensive of the introductory first aid courses. During this 70 hour (two week) session, participants will gain both theoretical (classroom) and practical (hands-on) training in a wide variety of medical emergency scenarios. They will also learn all the basic emergency medical techniques that fall under the responsibility of an Occupational First Aid attendant.

    There is no previous first aid training required (OFA Level 1 or 2 is NOT required). Candidates must be able to comprehend the information presented and be physically capable of performing the required skills to be issued an OFA certificate.

    Initial certification requires full participation & course attendance.

    Prerequisites:

    • Must be at least 16 years old

    • Must be in good physical shape

    • Must be committed and have perfect attendance for the full two weeks

    It is recommended that individuals complete OFA Level 1 and TE prior to taking OFA3 if they have no experience with First Aid

    Additional Training:

    To be eligible to be put onto the Gitxsan Safety Services dispatch roster, you must have a valid Driver’s Licence & take online training for:

    Pipeline Construction Safety Training

    WHMIS

    ICS100

    Step 2: Send a copy of your cover letter (stating how this course or recertification will increase the chances of getting and maintaining employment) , resume & status card to training@gitxsanbusiness.com

    Both steps need to be done in full before your application is considered complete.

    Recertification & Upgrading funding can be acceessed up to $1500 for tuition, textbooks, materials, etc. We do not give a living allowance.

    Step 2: Send information on the cost of the course and what is included in the cost, where and with who the training is provided and a letter from the training provider stating they have a spot in the course available for you.

    All steps need to be done in full before your application is considered complete.
