12 Hazelton High School students from six communities interested in pursuing a career in culinary arts were treated to a week in Sitka Lodge, a CIVEO camp located Kitimat. Working along side Red Seal Chefs students gained first-hand experience working in a camp kitchen, learning techniques, planning, work-flow and plenty of team work required to produce three meals a day.
Students stayed in the lodge housing and were also provided tours of the camp and other potential job opportunities available at camp. Living and working in camp was relatable for some with family members that are currently or had previously worked in camp. Many of the students have never been away from home so just being away from family was an experience for them.
All students earned a certificate of completion, high school credits and a new hands-on training experience to add to their resume.
This program was fully funded by Gitxsan Development Corporation and CIVEO.
Thank you to Coast Mountain School District 82 for partnering with us to offer this opportunity to our students.
